Bill Gates is optimistic about the future of fake meat and plant-based foods

“These products will ultimately be very good”

Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates gave his thoughts on the future of meat alternatives during his annual “Ask Me Anything” session on Reddit.

The 67-year-old billionaire answered questions from Redditors on a variety of topics, including the climate and veganism, prompting Gate to share his optimism about plant-based meat. “There are companies that are producing ‘beef’ in new ways and people that are working to still use cows but reduce methane emissions,” Gates wrote in the thread.

“I think these products will ultimately be very good, even if their share is small today,” he added. Gates said he has endorsed alternative meat brands Beyond Meat, Impossible Foods and Upside Foods (formerly known as Memphis Meats). However, the billionaire said he was less hopeful about the likelihood of the general public turning to veganism in a bid to save the climate.

“For people who want to go vegan, that’s great, but I don’t think most people will,” he wrote. The philanthropist concluded his responses to climate-related questions by stressing that he believes it all comes down to cost, no matter what industry is being talked about. “The key to climate change is to make the clean products as cheap as the dirty products in all emissions sectors — airplanes, concrete, meat, etc.,” Gates said. “It’s the only way we can ask all countries in the world to change. If it costs a lot, we won’t succeed.”
