US: The cost of living rises 6.2% – its highest level in 31 years

Biden says reversing rampant inflation is a ‘top priority’

President Joe Biden has vowed to make reversing the country’s rising inflation a ‘top priority,’ after the Consumer Price Index revealed inflation is at its highest level in 31 years.

The president has blamed the 6.2 percent increase in the cost of living on ‘market manipulation’ and ‘price gouging,’ despite the nation’s top economists pointing to the country’s supply-chain shortages and businesses struggling to meet the demand from COVID shutdowns as the reason for the rise in prices.

Biden said in a statement on Wednesday his $1.2 trillion Build Back Better plan will help slow the growing inflation problem and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has vowed inflation will not reach the exorbitant levels they were at during the Carter years, even as household debt increases to a record high.

Covid-19: Biden Says Vaccine Doses Could Be Available for All Adult Americans by End of May

Pharmaceutical giant Merck to help manufacture the Johnson & Johnson coronavirus vaccine

President Biden announced Tuesday that there would be enough doses of the coronavirus vaccine available for the entire adult population in the United States by the end of May, though he said it will take longer to inoculate everyone and he urged people to remain vigilant by wearing masks.

Mr. Biden had previously said there would be enough doses by the end of July. On Tuesday, he said the faster production of the vaccine was in part the result of an agreement by the pharmaceutical giant Merck & Co to help manufacture the new Johnson & Johnson coronavirus vaccine under an unusual deal, brokered by the White House.

He said that agreement, along with other efforts by the government to help Johnson & Johnson produce more doses quickly, will substantially increase the supply of the new vaccine and ramp up the pace of vaccination just as worrisome new variants of the virus have been found in the United States.

Johnson & Johnson one-shot coronavirus vaccine approved in the U.S.

All people people 18 and over eligible

A Centers for Disease Control advisory panel on Sunday recommended Johnson & Johnson’s one-shot COVID-19 vaccine for people 18 and over, clearing the way for inoculations to begin as soon as this week. The recommendation comes one day after the Food and Drug Administration on Saturday authorized Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use.

The vaccine is the third to be approved for use in the U.S., and the first that requires only one shot. The FDA’s Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee (VRBPAC) voted unanimously to recommend authorizing the vaccine by Janssen, a division of Johnson & Johnson, on Friday. The committee provides expert advice to the FDA, but does not have final say on approval.
